Hole in JJ CCR Counter Lung

Some month ago I figured out that something seems to be wrong while doing my positive and negative pre dive checks. I could clearly hear a sizzling noice at the top of my exhale lung but was not able to locate it properly. I did not have issues with holding the negative test stayed for many hours but with the positive test which ended up in flat lungs after some time (about 1 hour). While doing the positive test I did not hear or see anything wrong. Even with unmounting and unfolding the lung I have not been able to locate any hole.

Today I tried again and was able to locate a tiny hole at the assumed area at the top of my counter lung. This is a macro exposure from the hole – beside there is a thin line from a pen so you can get an impression about the very small size:

I set up a test environment with unmounted, unpacked and unfolded lungs. After inflating the loop using breath (or a tank) it looked like this:

test set up

Use soapy liquid or a leak spray to locate any leaks or holes in the loop. I’d recommend to check your whole loop including both lungs, all hoses, valves, manifolds and so on. A hole will look something like this:

After locating the hole in my counter lung I just used Aquasure to seal it. Lets hope this has been the only hole in my loop. I might also have issues with my over pressure valve and my automatic diluent valve which seems to make problems from time to time and where I’ll have an eye on it. I’ve about 130hrs now on the unit and this has been the only issue of this kind this so far.

The use of the leak spray has been recommended by Sepp but I’m not sure if it is sooo usefull when we talk about the low pressure in a CCR loop (might work better in areas with much higher pressure). I guess a soapy liquid will work at least the same way or better.

Thx to Mimpi for the spray, Sepp, Chris and other guys from the JJ CCR Facebook page for tips and suggestions.

Replacing HUD button on JJ-CCR

Some time ago the HUD buton on my JJ-CCR stopped working. No, thats not correct – it did NOT stop working. This happend steadily in the beginning with the need of several touches every time I tried to use it. It got worse and in the end it took me several minutes of trying to switch my HUD on/off which felt like 1 hour. This has been 4 weeks ago and since them I kept it switched on. This worked out very well and there has been no issues with the battery. According to the manufacturer it would hold several more months.

Two days ago I got a new HUD button and replaced it today. Things we need for doing this:

  • Torx Driver T20
  • Solder Iron
  • new HUD button
  • kitchen tissue
  • some grease
  • and most important: a JJ :-)

Torx T20 Solder Iron new HUD button JJ-CCR

Lets assume you have unmounted the lid of the JJ and have it ready to start in front of you. I would suggest to remove all batteries from your lid and controller before you start.

Anyway, I did not :-) . Screw off the torx screw fixing your old HUD button. Now gently try to remove the button. It may jump out a bit when you try to turn it around.

Then remove the isolation sleeve over the old connections or try to slide them down to be able to reuse it.

Use the solder iron to separate the old button from the connection to the lid. Try to remove any exessive solder, in my case there has also been a small piece of old wire.

By connecting the two wires from the lid manually I have now been able to switch off my HUD the first time in weeks now.

Now you should have two buttons laying around, make sure not to mix them :-)

As you can see there might be some dirt and old grease inside the hole in the lid, I would suggest to clean it now. Use some kitchen tissue or something similar.

Now take the new button and solder it to the wires from the lid. It might not make any difference but mind to connect the red wire from the button to the red wire from the lid and black to black.

Slide back the isolation sleeve or do some proper isolation otherwise. Before remounting the button into the lid do some tests if it is working (for this you have to reinstall the battery if you removed it before).

If everything looks fine then add some grease to the new button and put it back into the lid, press and turn gently to make sure not to jam the wires. Insert the screw and tight it not too much.

Do not forget to install the batteries if you have not done yet and do a proper test dive afterwards :-) .

Überlingen Tennisplatz

The Tennisplatz is one of my favorite dive sites in Lake Constance. Parking 50m off the water makes it a quite comfortable place crowded by many divers, so one has to escape to the depth to be with its own :-) . The following dive I did some days ago using my JJ CCR (as usual of course).

Located at Überlingen in the western part of the lake, the dive site is sloping down slowly until one hits a small wreck at 40m. It’s laying upside down with a broken bottom having a treasure chest inside which contains some stones only. The chest stayed open so I closed it and continued my descent. As always there is this huge burbot (Trüsche) laying near the wreck which makes me turn around and look to it for some time. The following video – done by a friend of mine in last year – gives you an impression for this part of the dive:

After seeing enough I turned right heading West and at around 50m the bottom gets more steep and you find some small walls. One starts at around 70m and the other one around 90m. The latter one is quite upright and nice, less than 10m in height. Down there is not tooo much to see (at least I did not explore anything interessting yet :-) , just sandy plain sloping down slowly. After touching down I continued my dive at the top of the wall. Down the wall I saw an other really huge burbot which I recognized was white, not green as usual. I continued my dive and reached the cross with the skull sitting on top. Some weeks ago I found it laying around and erected it which seemed to work. Below I saw this huge tree pointing towards the depth. Slowly I got up to the other Wall to see some well known landmarks. There are fisher nets, a box and doing a first deep stop I reached this thick cable crossing the bottom hanging 1m above. At around 75m someone tied a yellow rubber duck on it. Then I hit these huge wooden planks and the steel rope. Still ascending I reached the big wall near Parkhaus Post, an other well know dive site nearby. Down there at around 50m has been enough light already to see the boulders and the wall without a torch. Some weeks ago I even had light at the 70m wall which is very uncommon for the lake where you hit the dark side at 20m more often than not. Under a big overhang I continued heading West when I saw a rabbit laying around. It looked like an easter bunny and while investigating it I found it made of clay. Satting it upright I reached the place having some miniature figures nicely placed in the landscape shortly after. The scene is guarded by a red plastic crocodile giving shelter for a small burbot. I continued my ascent and when I reached the top of the wall I turned heading East.

I felt pretty cold now, the temperature down there has been around 5°C. I looked forward to reach the shallower parts where it will be 10°C and more but I had at least 30min until then. Staying on the top of the wall I headed back. Leaving the wall to reach the 15m deco ceiling I found the temperature to be around 7°C now. Still cold and still some time to get warm. At the 9m ceiling I met a couple of other divers who did not see me so I continued without communicating. At 6m I reached the sea weed and had some company by a large school of perch (Barsch) which are very numerous in the shallow parts of the lake. Now it got warmer and quite bright. Looking up I saw the platform at the end of a old rail track but I still had to stay at the 6m level so I continued to head East. After turning and reaching the platform again I layed down and watched a large, nicely red colored sickleback (Stichling) nesting and fighting. After cleaning my deco I surfaced slowly and as usual I did breathe my oxygen rich loop until I put off stages and fins and reached the car parking nearby.

Überlingen Tennisplatz, dive profile

After pulling off my dry suit some other divers around told me about a wooden wrack down at this dive site which I didn’t know about yet. Anyone interested in diving it with me? Scooter preferred…

Every Blog starts with a first post

This is for introducing the relaunch of my website which has been down for half a year now. I decided to start a blog and write about things I’m interested in which could be

  • diving with my JJ CCR
  • traveling around
  • hacking Unix/Linux
  • republishing contents of my former gallery
  • other stuff, which I forgot, most likely technical

Use this post for testing and giving general feedback.

Thx for reading mate :-) .
